Ruby
is a foundered mare that is permanently retired to Friends
of Ferdinand unless a very special home comes along.
Although not a retired racehorse, Ruby is one of the first
horses rescued by FFI during a trip to the Shipshewana
slaughter auction, before we dedicated ourselves to
racehorses. She has the kindest eyes that loves
children and truly is a
special "old soul."
Ruby is fostered
by Duncan, a nine-year-old boy with special needs, and his
family.
Duncan’s job is to groom Ruby,
clean her feet and take her for walks.
Ruby’s job is to let him, and she does her job very
well.
Ruby has taught
Duncan balance
while
she takes him for walks around the arena. She stands
perfectly still for Duncan while he grooms her and she holds
her feet up for him so that he can practice cleaning her
hooves.
Every kid
like Duncan needs a horse like Ruby.
