We
call him Stormy. He is a five year-old, 15.1 hand thoroughbred
gelding that was officially retired from racing November 2007.
Stormy was donated to Friends of Ferdinand because his owner wanted
a better life for this horse. Stormy has a small chip in his
knee, but it doesn't bother him at all. His owner knew
that if she kept him in the race industry, he would give it everything
he had and he wouldn't stay sound. She decided to give
him a chance at a different life and a new career.
Stormy
has a few trust issues, but we are working through them and he is
really beginning to show us a very fun personality. He gets
along well with the other horses, and likes to pester the mares.
He just loves to eat and makes the greatest squealing noises at
dinner time! Stormy also gets very comfortable every night.
Therefore, he would prefer a nice big stall where he can lay down
and stretch out. Stormy is sound for pleasure riding, flatwork
and dressage. He may be able to do more, but the vet will
need to approve those activities.
Update
August 2008: Stormy is now fostered in central Indiana
where he has started training as a pleasure horse. He spent 30 days
at an FFI foster home where he was trail ridden every day. He did
great! Now he learning how to use his body properly and carry himself
over his topline. You can read about his adventures at this foster/training
home here: http://retrainingtb.blogspot.com/
